Size of Cell

Most cells are microscopic and cannot be seen with the naked eye. They are seen only through a microscope.

Variation in Size:

  • Cell size may vary from a micrometer (a millionth of a meter) to a few centimeters.
  • Smallest cells are the bacteria, red blood cells in the human body. The smallest cells are Mycoplasma, which generally range in size from 0.1 to 0.5 micrometer.
  • Largest cells are the birds eggs(central yellow sphere). The largest cell is the egg of an ostrich, which is 170 millimeter in diameter.
  • Largest human cell is the female ovum (0.1mm in diameter).
  • Smallest human cell is the Red Blood Cell (0.0075 mm or 7.5um).
  • Longest cells of human body are the nerve cells, which may reach up to a length of 90cm.
